Seems like Facebook is everywhere, right? Wrong. But it will be soon…
Today Facebook announced that users will soon be able to embed public Facebook posts as easily as they can embed tweets and YouTube videos on websites, giving users the ability to stick their status updates in pages across the Web, and outside of Facebook. Photos, status updates, posts with hashtags, videos — all now can be embedded in pages on third-party sites outside of the social network.
"When embedded, posts can include pictures, videos, hashtags and other content," Facebook's Dave Capra wrote in a post on the site. "People can also Like and share the post directly from the embed."
The feature is being rolled out today on five sites -- first CNN, then Bleacher Report, Huffington Post, Mashable and People. Post embedding will be rolled out more widely in the coming weeks.
“But what about privacy?” you ask. Embedding will only be possible with posts that were made public or posted by someone who allows nonfriend subscribers, or fans, to their page.
According to the Facebook Developers blog, here’s how it will work:
“To embed a post, first check if the post is public by hovering over the audience selector (you'll see a globe icon). Only public posts from Pages and Facebook users can be embedded.
If the post is public, click the "Embed Post" option in the drop down menu:
In the dialog that pops up, simply copy and paste the code provided on your own web page:
These posts can include multimedia, such as pictures or video.
Like and share the Embedded Post directly from your web page
Embedded Posts display just like they do on Facebook, with the ability to show pictures, videos, hashtags, and other content. People can interact with Embedded Posts by:
- Liking or sharing the post directly from your web page
- Liking the Page or following other posts from the author using the top right button
- Visiting the post's comments, photos, hashtags and other content on Facebook
